I can’t update the plugin

The following errors can sometimes happen when you try to update the plugin to a new version.

The update isn’t appearing in Dashboard > Updates

You should be able to update the plugin via the main Updates page in the WordPress Dashboard. If you’re sure that a new version of the plugin is available but it’s not appearing for you to install, please check the following:

  • Is your license key active? If you have changed domain names (e.g. if you’ve moved from a development site to your live domain), go to the plugin settings page and re-save your license key to activate it on the live domain.
  • Has your subscription expired? If you bought the plugin more than 12 months ago and haven’t renewed then your subscription may have expired. You will need to renew or re-purchase the plugin to get a new license key before you can update.
  • Has the update only just been released? If the new version of the plugin was released very recently, then it may not be available for you to install yet. It can sometimes take a while for updates to become available on all sites. Please check back later to see if the update is appearing for you.

Error: SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO (or similar SSL error)

This SSL error means that your host is using an outdated version of OpenSSL and does not support the SSL Protocols that we are using to provide the latest version of the plugin. To solve the problem, you need to ask your web host or server administrator to update their OpenSSL software.

If this isn’t possible, please send us a support request with your WordPress logins and we can activate your license key manually if needed.

Error: Download Unauthorized

This error means that there’s a problem with your license key and it is not active on your website. You can only update the plugin if you have a valid and active license key.

Please go to the plugin settings page and check that your license key is active. If it says your license key is valid but you’re still getting this error when you try to update the plugin, please delete your license key and re-enter it.

It may be that you have moved to a different domain since you first activated the license key. If this is the case, you need to go to the plugin settings page on the old domain and delete the license key so that you can re-activate it on the new domain. If the old domain no longer exists, please contact us and we will manually deactivate the license key from your old domain.

If you’re having any other problems with your license key, please type it into the search above to find the solution.

Error: Forbidden

This 403 error means that something on your website is blocking the new version of the plugin from being downloaded. For example, this can be caused by a security plugin or a file permissions issue.

WPBeginner have provided an excellent article on How to Fix the 403 Forbidden Error in WordPress which will help you to find the cause of the problem.

Error: Update Package Unavailable

This means there’s a problem with your license key and it is not active on your website.

Please go to the plugin settings page and check that your license key is active. If it says your license key is valid but you’re still getting this error when you try to update the plugin, please delete your license key and re-enter it.

It may be that you have moved to a different domain since you first activated the license key. Error: PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT

Please check that your server has enough disk space for the update. As a general rule, you should assume that you need enough space for 2x the size of the .zip file containing the plugin. If this isn’t the problem, please send us a support request.

Could not create directory….

If you get an error saying that a directory could not be created, there could be a file or folder permissions problem on your server. Please try re-installing the plugin manually. If that still doesn’t work, please contact support.

Can’t update plugin on WordPress multisite

If you have a multisite network then the plugin must be network activated for updates to show up. You should then enter your license key on the sub-site(s) where you’re using the plugin.
