Posts Table Pro Use Case - Create a WordPress Directory

Use Posts Table Pro to build any type of directory without the need for a complex WordPress directory plugin - create staff directories, telephone directories product directories and more.

Directories are used to present information in a structured and easy-to-find format. Most WordPress directories include multiple fields of information, which users can sort or filter to find the entries they are looking for.

Posts Table Pro lets you create dynamic data tables, presenting content from your website in a directory format.

Use the shortcode to select the posts, pages or custom posts from your website to be displayed in the directory, as well as any other fields. This will create a searchable, sortable directory structure that makes it easy for your visitors to find the entries they’re looking for.

Read our in-depth tutorial on how to create a WordPress document library using Posts Table Pro. The instructions can equally be used to create any type of directory.

Common types of WordPress directory

Local business directory

Promote local products and services in your local area.

Staff directory

List your staff or create a WordPress telephone directory.

Members directory

List your organisation's members in a searchable, sortable table.

Product directory

Create a comprehensive directory of your products.

Example staff directory

This staff directory displays an organisation's employees and can also be used as a telephone directory. It has been created using the Posts Table Pro plugin shortcode as follows.

[posts_table columns="title,tax:title,tax:phone,tax:email" links="none" post_type="staff" show_footer="true"]

The shortcode is set to display a 'Staff' custom post type with custom taxonomies to display columns for name, job title, phone number and email address. The links are disabled so the staff members appear as a directory without separate pages to click through to.

Example book directory

This book directory displays the novels of author George R. R. Martin. It displays posts from the 'Books' custom post type on a WordPress website.

The book directory has been created using the Posts Table Pro plugin shortcode as follows:

[posts_table columns="title,tax:publisher,tax:amazon,tax:series,tax:publication-date" post_type="books" links="none"]

All the links are disabled so the books are displayed without the ability to click through to a separate page/post.

To customise your WordPress directory even further, you can use the documentation to change various elements of the table. This lets you control the default sort order, the number of rows per page or to display custom fields or taxonomies.
