Add ‘Favorite’ Buttons to Your WordPress and WooCommerce Tables

By Updated: October 2, 2019

WordPress Favorite Button Plugin

Today I’m going to tell you about a free plugin which adds Favorite buttons to your lists of WordPress posts, custom post types or WooCommerce products. It works beautifully with our Posts Table Pro and WooCommerce Product Table plugins.

  • Are you creating a WordPress video gallery and want people to select their favorite videos?
  • Maybe you’re listing WooCommerce products and want people to choose their favourite products? (Also see our tutorial about WooCommerce Wishlist plugins.)
  • Do you have a WordPress blog and want people to choose their favorite posts?
  • Perhaps you’re listing events in WordPress and want people to mark the ones they’d like to attend.

Whatever your reason for needing favourite buttons on your website, you can use these instructions to add them to any list of WordPress posts, any custom post type, or WooCommerce products.

How the favorite buttons work

You can use either of our table plugins to list your WordPress and WooCommerce content in a table. Then, you can use the Favorite plugin to add Favorite buttons. Your visitors can select their favorite posts or products, and create a handy shortlist.

When a visitors comes back to your website, they will still be able to see their selections. If they’re not logged in then their favorites are stored via browser session or a cookie. If they have an account on your website, then their favorites will appear even if they re-visit from a different browser or device.

How to add Favorite buttons in WordPress or WooCommerce

  1. First, use Posts Table Pro and WooCommerce Product Table to list your WordPress posts, custom post type or WooCommerce products in a table view. Set up the plugin using the instructions in the knowledge base, paying particular attention to the following settings:
    • When you add your list of columns, make sure you include the ‘content’ column (if you’re using Posts Table Pro) or the ‘description’ column (if you’re using WooCommerce Product Table). This is where the favorite button will appear.
    • Make sure you enable the ‘Shortcodes’ option on the plugin settings page. This ensures that the button appears in the table correctly.
  2. Now go to Plugins > Add New in the WP Dashboard.
  3. Search for ‘Favorites’ and you should see the plugin by Kyle Phillips in the list. Install and activate it.
  4. Now view the page where you’re using Posts Table Pro or WooCommerce Product Table. You will see a ‘Favorite’ button in the content column for each item in the table.

You can also add favorite buttons to other locations

The instructions above tell you how to add favorite buttons to the content/description columns in Posts Table Pro and WooCommerce Product Table. If you’d like to add them elsewhere – for example because you don’t want this column in your table – then that’s fine. Simply remove the content/description column and add the following shortcode to one of the other fields that you’re displaying in the table (e.g. the excerpt or a text or Visual Editor custom field).

This is also a good tip if you wish to use the Favorites plugin with our WooCommerce Quick View Pro plugin. Simply add the shortcode to the product short description, and show this in the quick view lightbox. That way, customers can add products to their list of favorites without having to visit the single product page.
